I was so excited yesterday when the Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds Catalog showed up in the mailbox. It was like Christmas morning for me, except way better. I spent hours yesterday just going page by page, oohing and aaahing over all the pictures.
So of course this got me thinking ahead to Spring. Which is really easy to do right now because the weather has been very spring like for December.
I started getting my seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds last year and I plan on doing so this year. I didn’t get to use my lettuce seeds because basically I ran out of room in the garden. So I am creating a plan to use them this year.
Now from everything I am reading Lettuce will grow nicely in a cooler environment. So I have decided to make a couple of skinny long raised beds that will be right up against the house along the driveway. It gets morning sun and when it rains it will drip off the eaves into the beds. Here is a picture of a skinner bed. It isn’t exactly what I am going to do but it will give you a nice idea.
I am looking to use some recycled Pallets to make this a light and easy Raised bed. I am hoping to really get some large amounts from our lettuce seed. Hoping that this will also help to control bolting since it is never in the afternoon sun.

Using pallets for a raised bed is a great (and cheap!) idea. I have lettuce growing in a raised bed now, and I found a nice bowl style pot at a yard sale for 50 cents. I have lettuce growing in that right on my front porch. I like having it in different places because you never know what will happen to one or the other.
This is such a coincidence because the last few days I’ve been drooling over Baker Creeks website! I have not ordered from them before but have heard good things about them. The worst part is they have SO MANY THINGS to look at and choose! I love winter, and I love the holidays, but I can’t wait for spring either!
What a great idea! We made our raised beds a year+ ago out of an old cedar fence that needed to be replaced. I’ve just spent the week re-filling these beds with a layer of shredded leaves and topping that with composted leaf mulch. Over the winter the leaves will break down and I’ll end up with more wonderful soil for the spring planting.
Off to look online at seeds since I don’t get catalogs in the mail!
I like the way you think! I’ve been thinking about spring planting too!
Thanks for sharing your raised bed ideas on Wildcrafting Wednesday.
